Volunteer Appropriate Adult - Barnsley (inc. Sheffield and Doncaster)
The Sova Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley Appropriate adult service is recruiting volunteers.
The role of the Volunteer Appropriate Adult is to safeguard the interests of vulnerable people in police custody when parents/carers are unable or unwilling to be there. Volunteers are present to facilitate communication, ensure the police interview is conducted properly and fairly and to ensure service users’ rights are respected and upheld.
Under the Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act 1984, children, young people and vulnerable adults (i.e. those who have mental health problems, a learning disability or are in some other way mentally disordered) cannot normally be interviewed by police officers about their suspected involvement in a criminal offence unless an Appropriate Adult is present.
Time commitment: 4-8 hours per week
