Black Country Independent Visitors Service Sova are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the contract to deliver the Independent Visitors Service across four local authority areas – Sandwell, Telford & Wrekin, Dudley and Walsall from 1st May 2018. An independent visitor provides one to one support to looked after children and young people aged up to 18 years. Independent visitors are appointed to a child where there is little or no contact with the child’s family members, or it is thought to be in the best interest of the child. It is voluntary participation and a young person must consent to being referred to Sova. As an independent visitor with Sova, our volunteers provide support on a monthly basis with meetings lasting 4 to 6 hours. The aim is to provide the child or young person with a trusted adult, who is independent from the local authority, with whom they are able to discuss any issues that may arise. The young person identifies areas where they would like some additional support and during the visits they may share an interest or hobby or go on an outing together. Independent visitors are asked to commit a minimum of 2 years to the project. The Black Country IV service will join our national network of IV services delivered across Gloucestershire, Hull, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, East Sussex and Derbyshire and the London boroughs of Harrow and Barnett. If you are interested in becoming a volunteers with any of our IV services please check out our volunteer role listing.
