Steve, who is still in custody, has nearly come to the end of his mentoring sessions with Sova. In our first session Steve admitted to being very shy and lacking in confidence when interacting with others. He spoke about some issues he had had with other inmates and how he struggled with confrontational behaviour and conflict.

Over the course of our appointments together we have worked on many positive thinking and confidence boosting skills, and discussed different ways in which he might approach dealing with difficult situations. In our last appointment together, Steve told me that he had had a disagreement with a wing-mate since we last met, but had reminded himself of some of the strategies we had discussed and attempted to put them to practice. As a result he said that he now feels more comfortable coping with some of the stressful situations that had previously caused him considerable anxiety.
