The role of an Independent Visitor was created as a result of 1989 Children’s Act; ensuring that young people in Care had access to someone who could befriend and support them. Sova recruits volunteer appropriate adults to support young people; someone who can offer a listening ear, do fun activities and be a friendly consistent role model Volunteer Independent Visitors will generally meet with a young person one or twice a month; with relationships frequently lasting for several years. Whilst the role is predominantly a Befriending initiatives; elements of Mentoring may occur for those young people in their mid-to-late teens to help prepare them for independent living. Becoming an Independent Visitor is an excellent opportunity for those who can offer a long-term commitment and/or are seeking to gain an insight and experience in the world of social care.
