The Sheffield Youth Justice Projects (SYJP), accommodated by our primary funder, Sheffield Youth Offending Service, consists of the Appropriate Adult (AA) Scheme and the Resettlement and Aftercare Provision (RAP) Mentoring Scheme. Funding for the Keeping Young People Engaged (KYPE) Mentoring Scheme was discontinued and closed on September 30th 2006.
SOVA has been responsible for the management of an Appropriate Adult Scheme in Sheffield since 1997 and has provided trained volunteers to attend four custody suites and two I.D. suites to support juveniles (10yrs-16yrs) and vulnerable adults (17+) detained in police custody. The scheme strives to provide volunteers for AA duty 24 hours per day, every day of the year.
In October 2004 SOVA was awarded funding through the Youth Justice Board (YJB) to provide a pilot mentoring scheme, working in partnership with Sheffield YOS, NACRO and SHED, for young people (as part of their resettlement and aftercare package) released on license after a period of incarceration.
SYJP Mentoring Scheme holds the National Mentoring and Befriending Foundation Approved Provider Standard.
