PIANO - Providing
Innovation And New
Opportunities is a two year project from which
started in February 2010 and will run until December 2011. It
is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and National Offender Management
Service (NOMS). The project is managed overall by the Resource Development
Unit, a department of London Probation Trust, who are currently working with 18
partner agencies, including SOVA, in the third and private sector. Many of
the partner agencies have a previous track record of working with offenders and
have a deep understanding of offender’s complex needs.
The project is a
pan-London project and the overall aim of the project is to improve the
employment prospects of 20+ year old unemployed offenders (participants),
supporting them into sustainable employment. In order to achieve this PIANO will
work with SOVA and other agencies to deliver the project.
Clients are
matched to an appropriate mentor, so that a unique mentoring relationship is
created. Working within strict rules regarding confidentiality the mentor aims
to empower the client enabling them ultimately to make their own choices.
Volunteer mentors will work with offenders to ensure that they are supported and
encouraged to work towards ultimately gaining employment and or training. SOVA
mentors will assist in the following ways:
- Attending meetings and appointments such as
college open days and interviews
- Practical help such as assistance with completing
application forms for employment or courses
- Help identifying and accessing positive
activities, interests and social networks to reduce isolation
- Help searching for employment and training
opportunities
In addition to this, there maybe other tasks the
volunteers will be required to assist the participants with to enable them to
make positive steps towards the main aim of progressing into sustainable
employment and making key steps to a better
future.
