How we help Our projects Sova East Sussex Independent Visitor Service At Sova Independent Visitors we find, train and support volunteers to become an Independent Visitor to children and young people who are in care. We deliver in partnership with CGL, the East Sussex Advocacy and IV ‘Speak Out!’ Service. At East Sussex Independent Visitor Service, we match each volunteer independent visitor with a child or young person who needs extra support and encouragement. The volunteer is there as someone ‘independent’ in the young person’s life, distinct from the professionals paid to support them. They might take the young person to the cinema or to the park, encourage them to try a new sport or hobby, support them at meetings or simply be there to talk to. It makes a real difference to a young person to know they have someone who is on their side, who has chosen to be there for them. Living in care can be very unsettling and some young people have very little or no contact at all with their birth families. It can make a real difference to a young person to know they have someone who is interested in them and who has chosen to be there just for them. Our volunteers commit to meet with their young person once a month for a couple of hours for at least 18 months or longer. Volunteer on this project!
