The Sova Derby Children’s Rights Service deliver some key statutory roles on behalf of Derby City Council as part of their Corporate Parenting responsibilities.  These include offering independent advocacy to looked after children.

 Sova services currently include:

  • Advocacy for looked after children & care leavers including young people in receipt of short breaks as per regulation 48
  • Independent Advocacy for child and young people involved in child protection conference.
  • Meetings in relation to young people who abuse others (ACYP)
  • Independent Visitors for looked after children.

Advocacy:

Young people access our advocacy service when they need extra support and encouragement. It makes a real difference to a young person to know they have someone, independent of all other services present to listen to them.  The advocate’s role is to help the young person express their wishes and feelings to those in positions of authority around them. The overall aim of the service is to fulfil statutory requirements to a high standard and improve outcomes for this vulnerable group. Sova achieve this by ensuring the views of children and young people are well represented whether in person, by letter or by providing moral support in formal meetings.

Independent Visitors:

We match each volunteer with a young person who needs extra support and encouragement, sometimes because they have little or no contact with their own families. The volunteer is someone ‘independent’ in the young person’s life, distinct from the professionals paid to support them. They might take the young person to the cinema or to the park, encourage them to try a new sport or hobby or simply be there to talk to. It makes a real difference to a young person to know they have someone who is on their side, who has chosen to be there for them.

Our Aim:

The overall aim is to fulfil statutory requirements to a high standard and improve outcomes for vulnerable groups. Sova achieve this by ensuring the views of children and young people are well represented and where required, they are provided with advocacy; befriending outside their individual care placements; and support with representation in child protection conferences.

I have never tried Sushi before, I always do different and new things with my independent visitor
