Sova Derby City Mentoring and Appropriate Adults

At Sova Derby we find, train and support volunteers to help young people to stay out of trouble and change their lives for the better.

Our team of staff and volunteers are involved in running a range of services for young people, including:

  • an Appropriate Adult Scheme where volunteers support young people, aged 10-17, detained in police custody when no-one else is available to be there for them. Appropriate Adults look after the best interests of the suspect, ensuring they understand their rights and that the interview goes smoothly.
  • support for first time young offenders / Youth Restorative Disposal
  • a mentoring service for young people affected by sexual exploitation
  • a mentoring service for young people referred from Derby Family Intervention Project

Our Restorative Justice project also works with young offenders to help them understand the impact of their crimes on the victims, and to explain why they committed the crime and take some responsibility for their actions.

All of our volunteers are fully trained and supported. Sova Derby City Mentoring and Appropriate Adults is funded by the Derby Youth Offending Service, Family Intervention Project, Safe & Sound Derby and Children and Young People’s Directorate.
