Appropriate Adults - Doncaster

We are looking to recruit and train volunteers as Appropriate Adults, supporting people within the criminal justice system in the Doncaster area.

No matter who you are, being held by the police for questioning cas be a difficult and stressful experience. To ensure that the most vulnerable are protected Appropriate Adults (AA) are appointed to provide support.

Under the Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act 1984, young people (10-16yrs inclusive) and adults (17yrs+) who are deemed vulnerable - those who have mental health problems and/or a learning disability - cannot be interviewed by police officers (unless there are exceptional circumstances) about their suspected involvement in a criminal offence in the absence of an AA. The role of the AA is to safeguard the interests of vulnerable suspects detained in police custody. If you were in police custody and didn't understand what was going on, wouldn't you want someone on your side? If you can offer time on a regular basis, patience, understanding and support, then this role could be for you.

We are currently recruiting volunteers who live in or near to Doncaster, ideally within 10 miles. Sova is currently commissioned to provide AAs in Doncaster for juveniles only between 08:00 and 22:00 who are detained at College Rd Police Station. If you are interested in volunteering we would like to hear from you.

Time commitment:  4-8 hours per week
