Sova Metro Health
Providing support to recently released offenders with mental health problems.
For people with a history of offending, one of the most effective ways of preventing re-offending and improving their chances of leading a better life is finding and keeping a job.
However, 'Beyond the Gate' - a 2010 research paper published by The Centre for Mental Health - states; "Only a small proportion of prisoners in England have jobs to go to on release and employment support offered in the criminal justice system is too often denied to offenders with mental health problems". The incidence of mental health issues in the offender population is very high, with 72% of male and 70% of female sentenced prisoners having two or more mental health disorders.
This projects aims to address some of this obvious need by providing volunteer mentors to support offenders with complex mental health needs from custody into the community.
Metro Health works alongside Enable, a specialist mental health service assisting people to find and maintain employment.
Metro Health is funded through The Centre for Mental Health by The Henry Smith Charity and The J Paul Getty Jnr Charitable Trust.
